CHARLOTTE YOUNG (1836 - ?) born in Aston Le Walls, Northamptonshire, UK

Our Young family line has been traced back to the mid 1700's, although I can not take credit for any of the information recorded.  Once again my excellent contact in Canada has done all the work.  The information has been taken from the parish records of Aston Le Walls in Northamptonshire, and also from census records.  We know from the 1881 census that Charlotte, who married John Rowntree, was born in Aston Le Walls.

On 6 October 1746 John Young married Sarah Soul in Aston Le Walls.  The following tree shows the next four generations of Youngs.  All baptisms and marriages of the Youngs in this tree took place in Aston Le Walls, with the exception of Charlotte who married John Rowntree in Aston, Yorkshire.

It makes one wonder how Charlotte, born in Northamptonshire, would have met John, born in Yorkshire.  There would have been far less travel in those days which is why many families are always found in the same villages.  The further back you go the more common this is.  However, the 1881 census offers an interesting piece of information.  In 1881 a Harry William Verelst is living at Aston Hall in Aston, Yorkshire.  He is a Justice of the Peace at the County offices and is living with his wife Annie Jane and employs several servants.  One of these servants is a Mary Young, born in Aston Le Walls and aged 28, employed as a maid and living in at Aston Hall.  This is more than likely Charlotte's youngest sister.  Incidentally there is also a George Young, almost certainly Charlotte's youngest brother, living in Rotherham with his wife and family and employed as a shoemaker.  Perhaps Charlotte and Mary were servants employed at Aston Hall, John was the gardener, and Charlotte and John met and fell in love.  How Charlotte and Mary came to be employed in Yorkshire in the first place, we may never know.

In 1901 Charlotte is still in Yorkshire with her husband.  They are living in Barncliffe Road, Upper Hallam, Sheffield and John is still working as a gardener.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION ABOUT ASTON HALL - WHERE JOHN AND CHARLOTTE ROWNTREE ONCE WORKED
Aston Hall stands within a few hundred yards of the church, and was once surrounded by a park.  It was the ancient residence of the D'Arcys. The present mansion was erected on the ancient site  It was built in 1772 by famous York architect, John Carr, for the 4th Earl of Holderness . The original Aston Hall was destroyed by fire in 1760.  It was rebuilt in 1772 and completed around 1790.  At about this time the earl sold Aston Hall to a former Governor of Bengal, Henry Verelst, son of Lionel Darell, Esq., and Isabella. In 1948 it was purchased by Rotherham Council for use as a Mental Hospital. After many years as Aughton Court Hospital it is now a luxury hotel - The Aston Hall Hotel.  The Hall reception area still houses the original mosaic floor.  The picture below shows Aston Hall as it is today.
